Joint Commission: No new patient safety goals
Organization is conducting extensive review
There will be no new National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) established in 2009 for implementation in 2010 as The Joint Commission performs an extensive review of the current goals and the process to develop goals.
NPSGs have evolved over time, becoming more specific and detailed in some cases, and therefore, require more time and resources to implement. The field is struggling to meet some of the current NPSGs, according to The Joint Commission.
The review will include a baselines survey, a review of potential changes by the Patient Safety Advisory Group and the Standards and Survey Procedures Committee, and final approval by the board of commissioners. The process will incorporate feedback from health care organizations. The goal is to clarify language, ensure that NPSGs are program-specific, delete NPSGs that are redundant or nonessential in specific programs, and consolidate similar NPSGs. Revisions to the NPSGs will be effective in 2010.
