Another significant and related HIT initiative under way is the Medicaid Health Information Network (HIN), which is expected to roll out this fall. The Medicaid HIN will enable clinicians to access Medicaid claims data on their patients, showing the medical encounter history of the patient for all providers billing through Medicaid, and any other payer participating in the HIN.
"The information can improve coordination of care by presenting the full spectrum of encounters to clinicians," says Mr. Snipes. "In addition, the HIN will include a personal health record portal for Medicaid recipients. This will provide tools for self-care such as immunization scheduling, infant growth norms, and tracking lab results. In the second year, Medicaid recipients will have access to their own claims history."
