• Online consumer health information provider adam.com (Atlanta) said it will purchase Dr. Greene’s HouseCalls, a pediatric web site (www.drgreene.com). Dr. Greene’s HouseCalls will become the pediatric channel of adam.com, and content from HouseCalls will be available on adam.com immediately. The acquisition, which has been approved by the adam.com board of directors, is slated for completion in July. The agreement calls for Dr. Alan Greene and key staff members to be employees of adam.com to produce the channel. Greene will take an equity stake in adam.com, and will help to define new product development and direction through participation in the adam.com advisory board. The HouseCalls web site contains all original content and addresses topical issues as well as questions from users. Green has developed affiliations and sponsorship agreements with a number of well-known organizations, including iVillage/Parent Soup and Yahoo! Internet Life,
• The Health Channel (San Francisco) has entered into an agreement with HealthMagic (Denver), a web technology company, to license its proprietary Health Compass OnSite lifelong health record. As part of the agreement, The Health Channel (www.thehealthchannel.com) will distribute the Health Compass OnSite product to its personal health membership customers, enabling consumers to create a portable and private repository of their entire health history over the Internet. Gail McFaddin Anderman, chief business development officer for HealthMagic, said the agreement means that "every visitor to The Health Channel will have the opportunity to establish a private and secure place on the Internet to house their personal health information and that of their family." Founded in 1995, HealthMagic (www.healthmagic.com) is a web technology company that develops information management products for the healthcare industry.
• Central Network Communications (Montreal) said it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Professional Support (Wilmington, MA), a provider of computer system technology, services and support to healthcare professionals in the United States. PSI will become part of CNC-Vantage, a wholly owned subsidiary of Central Network Communications (CNC). CNC-Vantage was formed primarily to be an umbrella corporation for CNC’s U.S. operations, and currently consists of Vantage Health Solutions (formerly Vantage Point), a developer and supplier of healthcare integrated software systems, and Plomann and Associates, a healthcare consulting group, and with the close of this transaction, PSI. Truman Esmond, president and CEO of CNC Vantage, said that the acquisition will bring "added value to CNC’s offerings with medical billing software, Y2K compliance and secure internet transaction application expertise." In related news, CNC-Vantage signed a lease for 5,000 square feet of office space in Chicago to house its headquarters.
• LION Bioscience AG (Heidelberg, Germany) said it has entered into a three-year licensing agreement with Pharmacia & Upjohn (P&U; Bridgewater, NJ) for the use of LION’s integrated bioinformatics solution system, bioScout. LION will use its customization services to integrate P&U’s existing in-house bioinformatics systems with the bioScout platform. The software, which simultaneously accesses information from different private and public genetics databases, will be installed at P&U’s research site in Sweden and will be made accessible to its other research sites around the globe. Under the agreement, LION also will provide user support and training for the duration of the contract. Further terms of the deal were not disclosed. LION Bioscience AG is a genomics and bioinformatics company, which integrates a collection of proprietary genomics technologies ranging from experimental biology to information technology.
