• The Information Services division of The Dialog Corp. (Cary, NC) has launched DataStar WebCharts, a new tabular display feature on DataStar intended to help users in the pharmaceutical sector to create tabular charts from their search results. The product is available free to new and existing DataStar customers, and is fully integrated into DataStar Web. It can be downloaded from www.dialog.com. The WebCharts are intended to be particularly useful for examining drug developments.
• InfoSpinner (Dallas) has been granted a U.S. patent that relates to web page generation and application serving. The patent covers a product called the infoSpinner ForeSite Application Server that allows customers to "use what you’ve got," the company said, providing a scalable and extensible solution for accessing information from all forms of data systems to develop e-business products.
• Hewlett-Packard (Palo Alto, CA) has released its CodeRunner web product suite for defibrillation data management. This product allows users to remotely access, input, download, review, and archive defibrillator cardiac event data collected from both automatic and manual defibrillators. The product eliminates the need for multiple serial-communication ports and modems at a central location, as well as the need to have PCs waiting for incoming calls.
• Kegler LLC (Orlando, FL) is releasing its WebMBS medical billing and practice management software. The product combines a practice management system with an Internet-based billing service. The company said it also has plans to release WebTAS appointment scheduler software, which gathers information about each appointment and analyzes data related to them to help physicians reduce patient wait times.
• Medical Informatics Engineering (Fort Wayne, IN) has released its web-based interface for The Medical Management. Called W3M2, it allows physicians to retrieve information from their Medical Manager system using only an Internet browser. The company is allowing free downloads of W3M2 at www.w3m2.com for a brief period so physicians and others can test it.
• Medirisk (Atlanta), through its CareData Reports consumer research organization, has published the results of the 1998 Managed Pharmacy Consumer Survey. The survey, conducted from May through August 1998, includes responses from more than 25,000 health plan enrollees in 15 major markets. The study found that the issues that best predicted satisfaction with the pharmacy benefit were, in order: Ability to get what the patient and his/her doctor believe to be the best medication for the condition; amount the patient personally pays for prescriptions; courteousness of the plan representatives; and information and counseling from pharmacists about medication. • NDC Health Information Services (Atlanta) has un veiled a new service that allows pharmacies to submit durable medical equipment claims electronically for Medicare approval. The service allows pharmacies that in the past may not have stocked some equipment to expand their offerings. Pharmacies submit claims electronically in a standard claim format through NDC, and claims are edited before submission. Pharmacies receive a real-time response, and they can select items from NDC’s preferred providers.
• Phase Forward (Waltham, MA) has announced that its InForm web software and InPhase services meet the recently published FDA Guidance for Industry Com puterized Systems Used In Clinical Trials, and the requirements of 21 CRF Part II, the Electronic Records, Electronic Signature Rule. Among the key FDA requirements are for full auditing, user authorization, and signature controls.
• Quality Systems (Tustin, CA) has released version 3.0 of its Dental Clinical Product Suite. The new version expands the automation of processes, including the addition of a Smart Progress Notes module. This allows providers to quickly enter clinical notes in a patient’s electronic chart regarding the progress of a given condition or treatment.
