What does a 'public safety room'look like?
The public safety room at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, PA, has several special features to help ensure the safety of staff and patients in the ED, according to Harry Myers, director of safety, security, and parking. Here is his description of those features:
- The room allows for isolation of a detained person from the rest of the ED.
- A separate but equally secure patient treatment room is available directly across from the public safety room.
- The room is equipped with a high-security bench designed specifically for prisoner control and the safety of everyone.
- The room has a county radio installed (police, fire, and EMS bands) with emergency one-button assist-officer feature.
- There is a bathroom next to the public safety room with direct access and electronic door-locking features to maintain optimal control of the patient.
- There are two large windows made of tempered glass for observation from outside the room by back-up security or police.
- Gun lockers are available on the outside of the room for law enforcement to use as needed.
- The outside entrance into the ED at that location and into the public safety room is supervised by the medical center's access control system.
