<p>For decades, clinicians and the public assumed that copper intrauterine devices (IUDs) prevented pregnancy by preventing implantation. There also was fear that IUDs could increase a woman&rsquo;s risk of HIV infection. Results of a new study suggested these assumptions are incorrect.</p>
