More states begin investigating Columbia/HCA billing practices
Columbia’s woes continue to mount. At least 10 states now are looking into whether Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. overbilled state health programs for the poor, adding to an expanding federal probe of the hospital giant.
Officials in Arkansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming told the Associated Press this week they are examining whether the company overbilled state Medicaid programs. More than a quarter of the 33 states that host Columbia hospitals have begun inquiries into the nation’s largest publicly traded hospital owner.
Alabama, Florida, and Texas investigators confirmed there are inquiries in their states. The states pursuing separate inquiries into Columbia join federal prosecutors, private insurers, and the National Association of Securities Dealers in examining the way the hospital chain does business.
