Note pads link to patient education sources
Rather than nagging physicians to tell patients about free educational materials available to Kaiser Permanente members in Southern California, staff at the publications department made it impossible not to spread the news. They provided the physicians with note pads that have the telephone number of the center that distributes the materials printed on them.
"Physicians can use the note pads for writing notes to the patients. Then the patient will have the telephone number of our call center where they can request a copy of the three educational materials," says Emilie Sparks, MS, CHES, publication supervisor at Southern California Permanente Medical Group in Pasadena.

When patients call the number, they can request a 100-page book that lists the health education programs Kaiser offers for the year. They can also ask for a Health Phone directory, which lists the codes callers must punch in to listen to educational tapes via the telephone. A third item available to members is a handbook titled Healthwise, A Selfcare Guide for You and Your Family. The 300-page book has tips on preventing health problems, as well as self-care instructions and information on when to see the doctor.
The materials are available in English and Spanish at no cost to members.
