Changes proposed in June 5 announcement
Besides changes in methods for calculating physician practice expense, HCFA's proposed rule published in the the June 5 Federal Register contains a number of other changes in how practices are reimbursed for Medicare patients, including:
- a requirement that the physician perform the pre-anesthesia exam or review one performed by another qualified individual;
- re-basing the Medicare Economic Index to 1996 instead of 1989;
- permitting separate payment for physician interpretation of an abnormal Pap smear in all settings;
- revision of Medicare payment for drugs and biologicals;
- codification of regulations pertaining to physician private contracting;
- application of mandates under the Balanced Budget Act to payment for outpatient rehabilitation services.
