Tips for Building the Mind-Body Connection
Tips for Building the Mind-Body Connection
Help employees tune in to their "body-beepers." Where on their bodies are they feeling tension? Employees need to learn what their own body tension signals are.
Try to incorporate the basics of mind-body fitness into activities you are already doing. Use unique music, and teach basic progressive relaxation techniques. Give tips on tightening, holding, and then relaxing different muscle groups.
Choose outside instructors carefully. If you want to incorporate yoga or tai chi into your programming, or you simply want to hire outside instructors, make sure the classes are taught by safe, qualified instructors who can plug into your company's structure and mission. In addition to checking references and making sure they are experienced in corporate wellness programs, here are some associations that certify instructors: The American Martial Arts Association, The National Association for Strength Training and Conditioning, the Institute for Aerobics Research, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Aerobics & Fitness Association of America, and the American Council on Exercise.
Look for the "mind-body" element in basic fitness activities: Relax in the great outdoors. This type of programming could include visualization, affirmations, or guided imagery - but it doesn't have to.
Use common sense: Before beginning a new program, determine if it's right for your employees and whether it fits into your mission and objectives.
