How Choose to Lose works
Teaching people why they are fat is key
Choose to Lose is a complete, ready-to-deliver combination weight loss and healthy eating program developed by Ron Goor PhD, MPH, and his wife Nancy Goor, MFA. People are taught several key components in an effort to promote lifestyle changes. They include:
• It takes time to make dietary changes.
People are taught to slowly change from high fat foods to low fat foods. For example, they are told to switch from whole milk to 2% milk, then to 1% milk, then to nonfat milk.
• Eating fat makes people fat.
The fat people eat is not burned right away but stored in the body. If people eat less fat than is required for energy needs, the difference is made up by burning the stored fat.
• Following a fat budget is vital.
Each person is given the tools to develop a personal fat budget, which is the maximum number of fat calories they can eat each day to reach and maintain their health weight. They can budget for high fat splurges by eating fewer fat calories each day and "saving them up."
• It is important to eat an adequate number of total calories.
Starvation diets depress a person’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) to conserve stored energy. Therefore, fat burns more slowly.
• Muscle burns fat.
Daily aerobic exercise about 30 minutes of walking is necessary to build the muscle that burns fat. Muscle burns energy at a high rate. Therefore, those people who have more muscle have a higher BMR and burn calories, including fat, faster.
The program also teaches people how to read food labels, how to select foods in a restaurant, and how to eat a balanced diet.
