SE hospitals enjoy highest satisfaction ratings
Hospitals in the Norfolk, VA, market received the country's highest consumer ratings in terms of coordination among all the providers who took care of them, according to a recent study by the Lincoln, NE-based National Research Corporation (NRC). Ranking a close second is the Jacksonville, FL market. In last place is the Youngstown, OH, market.
The NRC published the findings in its Satisfaction Report Card, 1997 Results. The data came from the corporation's annual study representing more than 400,000 consumers and 2,500 hospitals.
Other questions included: Would you recommend the facility to family and friends? Indicated by percentage of "definitely yes" responses, the top three ratings went to:
· Beth Israel Hospital in Boston - 96.2%;
· Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia - 93.8%;
· Emory University Hospital in Atlanta - 92.4%.
In national figures, spanning the continuum of care, "excellent" and "very good" patient responses regarding amount of time spent with doctors and staff was 56.4%.
On staff helpfulness in reducing or eliminating pain, the Ann Arbor, MI, market garnered the highest ratings with excellent responses from 39.4% of patients surveyed. The lowest satisfaction was in Vallejo, CA, with 17.4%.
In health maintenance organizations, consumers rated the ease of making appointments by phone: Excellent - 29.0%, very good - 32.1%, good - 25.2%, fair - 10.0%, and poor - 3.8%. The national average for all types of practices was 33.4% excellent marks from 33.4% of the consumers. Fee-for-service plans and preferred provider organizations outstripped the national average with 40.0% and 36.9% respectively.
