NHO President Mahoney to step down at year’s end
John J. Mahoney, president of the Arlington, VA-based National Hospice Organization (NHO) since 1984, told the organization’s board of directors in April that he intended to step down at the end of this year. Mahoney took the trade organization’s helm at a time of serious infighting and financial distress and steered it through a period of stability and five-fold growth in provider membership. Announcement of his decision created a big stir at NHO’s annual management and leadership conference, held in Washington, DC, in late May.
Mahoney told conferees that he intended to continue working on the organization’s priorities for the next six months and did not want to become a "lame duck" administrator during that period. After that, he said, he hopes to remain involved in the hospice community and continue as president of the National Hospice Foundation, NHO’s fund-raising auxiliary. A search committee to find a replacement will be appointed by NHO chairman John Carney, MEd, CEO of Hospice Inc. in Wichita, KS.
