The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, managed by the National Quality Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is seeking qualified applicants for the 1999 Board of Examiners. Examiners are an integral part of the Award Program, which recognizes role models of organizational excellence, fosters the sharing of best practices, and promotes performance excellence across the nation.
Benefits of participation: The board of examiners consists of approximately 300 volunteers who are selected from industry and service organizations, education and health care organizations, professional and trade organizations, government agencies, and other not-for-profit organizations. Examiners have the opportunity to network with, and learn from, some of the nations’ foremost professionals who are committed to achieving performance and business excellence.
Members of the board contribute their expertise to ensure the continued competitiveness of American business while developing new skills that will contribute to their personal and professional growth.
Barbara Davis, a current examiner and vice president of Clinical Quality Systems at the University of Maryland Medical Systems, states: "Being an examiner has helped me better understand what is required of high performing organizations.
"As I learn more about the criteria and see what other organizations are doing, I get ideas about what to improve at my organization. In addition, at training and through the evaluation process, I have networked with some of the best people from the country’s best organizations. It is a great opportunity to grow personally and has helped me be a leader in my field," she adds.
What do they do?
Role of the board: Examiners review, write analysis of, and score written applications for the award. The evaluation process consists of three stages: Independent Review, Consensus Review, and Site Visit Review. All applicants for the award receive a written feedback report prepared by members of the Board of Examiners. In addition to their application review activities, Examiners may contribute to the National Quality Program through outreach and educational activities.
How to apply: Examiner applications will be available Nov. 9, 1998, and must be postmarked no later than Jan. 8, 1999.
