Undiagnosed resident exposes patients to TB
An undiagnosed surgical resident with active tuberculosis exposed patients and co-workers at four Boston-area hospitals.
More than 3,700 patients and hospital employees received notices that they needed to be tested.
The surgical resident was infectious from Dec. 1, 2004, to June 4, 2005, when she had clinical duties at Boston Medical Center, VA Boston Health Care System, Brockton Hospital, and Cape Cod Hospital.
According to a report in the Boston Globe, TB screening at Boston Medical Center revealed the infection in the summer of 2004, but the doctor did not follow through with an appointment for a chest X-ray.
The doctor was diagnosed with pneumonia in January and was diagnosed with TB in June 2005. She stopped working June 2.
