  • Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy Are Associated with an Increased Risk of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke

    It has been established that women who have hypertension during pregnancy from any cause, compared to those without a history of hypertension, have an increased risk for subsequent stroke. Investigators in this study from Taiwan looked at the differences between the four major types of hypertensive disorders and the relative risks of subsequent stroke in women.

    The reported incidence of post-stroke seizures varies and appears to have a higher incidence following hemorrhagic stroke. Post-stroke seizures have been associated with a greater length of hospitalization, increased mortality, and complications. This study compared four seizure prophylaxis strategies to determine the greatest net benefit for patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. There was a better outcome with short-term antiepileptic medication use compared to long-term use.

  • Autochthonous Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever in Europe

    Two patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever acquired in Spain are reported. The index patient acquired infection from a tick bite, and the second patient was a nurse who cared for the index patient. The first patient died in the hospital with multi-system organ failure and was diagnosed at autopsy. The second patient recovered with supportive care and was treated with ribavirin, but it was unclear whether the use of ribavirin was helpful.
