Magnetic Resonance Imaging Evaluation of Perivascular Space Abnormalities in Neuromyelitis Optica
Perivascular space (PVS) abnormalities were demonstrated in two cohorts of patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) as compared to healthy controls. Magnetic resonance imaging provided visualization of PVS enlargement, and quantification of reduced flow in NMOSD patients, both of which were found to be associated with disease outcomes.

Scrambler Therapy for Neuromyelitis Optica Pain Treatment
Scrambler therapy appears to significantly reduce central neuropathic pain for patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, although pain reduction is not shown to be sustained for more than 30 days after treatment.

Clinical Trials of IL-6 Inhibitors for the Treatment of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders
In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder patients, satralizumab monotherapy demonstrated a decrease in relapse rate when compared to placebo. In a randomized, open-label, multicenter trial of tocilizumab vs. azathioprine, treatment with tocilizumab demonstrated a decreased risk of a relapse compared to azathioprine.

Eculizumab Shows Benefit in a Treatment Trial of NOSD
In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of aquaporin-4 antibody-positive patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders, eculizumab demonstrated a decrease in the risk of a relapse. Patients could continue their other stable-dose immune suppressive therapies while enrolled in the trial.

Comparison of Two Apheresis Techniques for Treating Relapses in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders
Based on a large study of patients in a national registry, investigators reported similar efficacy when comparing the two apheresis techniques: plasma exchange vs. immunoadsorption for the treatment of relapses in NMOSD. Early initiation of apheresis was associated with better outcomes.

Pregnancy Outcomes in Patients with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders
Based on a retrospective analysis of an international cohort of women with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders who had at least one pregnancy, the authors report a higher risk for miscarriage and preeclampsia in patients who were diagnosed before pregnancy.
