Novel Combined Oral Contraceptives and VTE Risk: What Do We Know?
Recently, novel combined oral contraceptives containing estradiol valerate-dienogest, estetrol-drospirenone, and 17-beta estradiol with nomegestrol acetate have been released. Whether these types of estrogen are safer than ethinyl estradiol formulations in terms of venous thromboembolism risk is unknown.

Are You Sitting Down to Read This? You May Want to Stand Up

Major Cardiovascular Event Risk Reduction with Pitavastatin in People Living with HIV
A large randomized, controlled trial (REPRIEVE) conducted by Grinspoon and colleagues showed that in participants living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who are at low-to-moderate risk for cardiovascular disease, those who received pitavastatin had a 35% lower risk of experiencing a major adverse cardiovascular event over a follow-up of approximately five years than those who received placebo.

Pregnancy with IUDs in Place: What Is the Risk of Complications?
In this retrospective cohort study, 233 individuals who conceived with a copper intrauterine device (IUD) in place were followed. There were 44 ectopic pregnancies, 31 non-viable intrauterine pregnancies, and 158 viable intrauterine pregnancies. Of the viable pregnancies, 137 patients continued the pregnancy and, of these, 54 had the IUD removed. Those who underwent IUD removal had a lower rate of pregnancy loss (33%) compared to those who retained the IUD (61.4%).

Second Trimester Induction of Labor: Do Multiple Prior Cesarean Deliveries Increase the Risk of Complications?
In this retrospective cohort study among patients who underwent second trimester induction of labor for fetal demise or pregnancy termination, those with two or more prior cesarean deliveries had an increased risk of uterine rupture (6.25%) compared to those with one prior cesarean delivery (0%) or no prior cesarean delivery (0%) (P = 0.004).

Measure Stroke Risk with Asymptomatic Severe Carotid Artery Stenosis
A community-based, retrospective, observational study of patients with asymptomatic severe carotid artery stenoses showed the crude stroke risk over five years was about 5%. Patients whose stenoses progress to high grade or start at that severity were at the highest risk for stroke.

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Increased Risk of Stroke
It has been established that women who have hypertension during pregnancy from any cause, compared to those without a history of hypertension, have an increased risk for subsequent stroke. Investigators in this study from Taiwan looked at the differences between the four major types of hypertensive disorders and the relative risks of subsequent stroke in women.
