In patients without human immunodeficiency virus who were diagnosed with Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, mortality rates were similar between the low-dose vs. conventional-dose trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) groups, while low-dose TMP-SMX was associated with fewer adverse events.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole versus Placebo for Skin Abscesses After Incision and Drainage
A multicenter, double-blind, randomized clinical trial found that a 7-day course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole following incision and drainage (I&D) resulted in a higher rate of cure for skin abscesses compared to I&D and placebo (80.5% vs 73.6%, respectively; P = 0.005).

Clindamycin vs. Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole for Uncomplicated Skin Infections
Five hundred twenty-four children and adults with either cellulitis or abscesses larger than 5 cm (smaller for children) were enrolled in a multisite prospective study of clindamycin vs. trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole dosed for 10 days. Cure rates did not differ between the treatments, and rates of adverse events were similar in the two groups.
