  • What Are F-Waves and What Do They Tell Us?

The presence or absence of F-waves is an important observation during the electrophysiological investigation of a patient with acute, progressive weakness. But the underlying physiological basis of F-waves has been elusive. This ex vivo animal study showed that F-waves are solely generated by motor nerves arising from the ventral horn of the spinal cord and require intact synapses.

  • Moderate-Intensity Exercise OK for Statin Users with Muscle Pain

The go-to drug therapy patients use to lower their bad cholesterol levels can cause muscle pain for some, but researchers found moderate exercise would not exacerbate that pain.

  • Diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis May Be Challenging

Mimics of myasthenia gravis, including functional neurologic disorder, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, chronic ptosis, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, mitochondrial cytopathy, or low-grade myositis, can make the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis difficult.

  • Late-Onset Pompe Disease: A Review of Clinical Features

In this systematic literature review of studies that evaluate motor and locomotion function in patients with adult, late-onset Pompe disease, the clinical spectrum reveals weakness of respiratory, axial, and proximal limb muscles.

  • Inclusion Body Myositis

This is a population-based study of inclusion body myositis (IBM) patients from a region of Sweden over a 33-year period. IBM presents later in life and has an unusual pattern of weakness with finger flexion, quadriceps, and swallowing muscles affected. Although it is described as an inflammatory myopathy, it does not respond to any immune-suppressive medications. It is a progressive disorder that reduces lifespan.

  • Patterns of Weakness in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Unusual patterns of weakness in the various motor neuron disorders may point to a specific diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, if supported by electrophysiological evidence of chronic denervation.

  • Acute Flaccid Myelitis 2018

The number of reported cases of acute flaccid myelitis, a paralytic disease of unknown etiology, has increased.

  • Prognosticating Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow

In a large retrospective review of treatment outcome for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, no difference was found in outcomes between any of the various conservative or surgical therapies, but prognosis was determined by the severity of the lesion at time of diagnosis.
