This webinar begins with a summary of conventional prenatal screening. The webinar will review traditional test performance, discuss the consistent 5% false positive rate, and summarize the technology behind non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). Because NIPT has superior performance characteristics as a screening test for the common aneuploidies, adoption of this technology was rapid and led to the practice guideline statements of ACOG, SMFM, ACMG, and ISPD to help practitioners understand and implement this complex technology. Recent guidelines stated NIPT should be offered to high-risk women due to limited validation data in the average-risk population. However, there now is a large validation study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine that proves NIPT out-performs conventional screening.
There are different ways to implement NIPT into general practice. Depending on the availability of a nuchal translucency ultrasound, some offices may do a viability scan and draw NIPT as early as 10 weeks. There are different protocols that can be implemented, but the most crucial part of implementation is patient education.
Making sure patients are properly informed and understand what NIPT is screening for is the crux of properly implementing this type of testing into practice, especially in the average pregnancy population.
