One in five U.S. residents speaks a foreign language at home, and 63% of surveyed hospitals saw patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) on a daily or weekly basis. Patients with LEP experience higher-than-average readmission rates, experience more adverse events, and have increased length of stay in hospitals compared to English-speaking patients. It's imperative for hospitals to equip their staff with the right tools to address the needs of every patient.
In this session, attendees will learn about the new civil rights law from Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act as it applies to hospitals and other healthcare providers. This law explains the requirements for nondiscrimination, required signs and notices, and interpreters under the new Hospital Improvement Act.
