Newborns often lose 5-10% of their body weight in the first week of life. Weight gain then occurs at a rate of about 20-30 grams per day. In addition, the etiology of abdominal pain differs depending on the child’s age and so the differential diagnosis will vary. It is imperative for ED physicians to differentiate those with life-threatening pathology requiring immediate intervention from those with self-limiting causes of abdominal pain. This module will review some of the most common neonatal gastrointestinal emergencies.
This module is also included in the training bundles: Neonatal Emergencies: Critical Concepts Compendium and Pediatric and Neonatal Emergencies: Critical Concepts Compendium
