Patients with a known inborn error of metabolism can arrive in the ED prior to significant decompensation with apparently mild symptoms. These patients will often provide a letter from their metabolic specialist with specific instructions on how to manage their condition, from the appropriate labs to order to treatment plans and goals. Involvement of the metabolic specialist in each step of the treatment and disposition plan is the key to optimal management of these patients. This modulewill review some of the most common metabolic emergencies in children.
