Across the USA, the past decade has shown a substantial increase in the number of behavioral health emergency chief complaint patients presenting at hospital emergency departments. At the same time, a nationwide shortage of psychiatrists has emerged, and the demographics of the current psychiatrist pool shows that this shortage will not be ending any time soon. So how might emergency departments ensure that their emergency behavioral health patients receive timely and appropriate psychiatric interventions?
During this program our Presenter defines still relatively new, Emergency Telepsychiatry giving psychiatrists the ability to provide treatment in multiple hospitals separated by great distances simultaneously. This is giving patients high-quality and prompt access to psychiatric specialists, which has proven effective in initiation of treatment, reduction of suffering, and stabilizing many patients to the point where inpatient hospitalization is no longer indicated. The mechanism of On-Demand Emergency Telepsychiatry is explored, along with a discussion of the potential positives and drawbacks of adapting these approaches.
