Doxycycline Plus a Beta-Lactam for Treatment of Inpatients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia
In this retrospective study of an elderly male population hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia, the combination of doxycycline with a beta-lactam was at least as effective as a respiratory fluoroquinolone or a combination of a beta-lactam with azithromycin.

Outcomes of COVID-19-Associated Acute Myocarditis
In a review of COVID-19-associated acute myocarditis, investigators learned it is a rare complication that can occur without concomitant pneumonia, and frequently presents as cardiogenic shock. With supportive therapy, the short-term mortality rate is low.

Identifying Community-Acquired Pneumonia During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Pneumonia is an infection of the alveoli of the lungs. Alveolar infection results in inflammation that disrupts normal pulmonary function, producing impaired gas exchange. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Pathogens can infect the lung parenchyma through three routes: inhalation, aspiration, or hematogenous spread. In community-acquired pneumonia, the infection is initiated outside the hospital. The prevalence of COVID-19, the clinical disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has changed the landscape of pneumonia.

Community-Acquired Pneumonia in the Era of COVID-19
Community-acquired pneumonia is a leading infectious cause of hospitalization and mortality, with increased prevalence during the current COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to focus on appropriate testing, prompt treatment, and disposition to improve outcomes and maximize efficient use of limited resources during this global pandemic.

Pediatric Pneumonia — Diagnostic and Therapeutic Stewardship
A randomized, multicentered trial in the United Kingdom and Ireland showed children receiving amoxicillin for community-acquired pneumonia perform similarly well with lower dose (35-50 mg/kg/day vs. 75-90 mg/kg/day) and shorter duration (three vs. seven days) treatments.

Prophylactic Probiotics Do Not Reduce the Risk for Developing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia
A multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial revealed the use of prophylactic probiotics did not reduce the risk for developing ventilator-associated pneumonia or improve other outcomes for intensive care unit patients, compared to placebo.
