  • The Natural History of Aortic Stenosis Revisited

A large multi-institution observational study of patients referred for Doppler echocardiography to assess for aortic stenosis has shown that discrepant measurements are not uncommon. When four-year all-cause untreated mortality is considered, the intermediate grades of aortic stenosis behave like the next highest level stenosis, which suggests that we should consider intervening earlier in moderate to severe stenosis.

  • Omicron Variant: A Superspreader with Low Severity?

While the emerging omicron variant of COVID-19 is “blowing through” previously infected and vaccinated people in South Africa, preliminary evidence indicates the highly mutated virus will cause less severe disease.

  • Disease Severity and Perinatal Outcomes of Pregnant Patients with COVID-19

In this observational cohort study of patients with singleton gestation and positive coronavirus test, patients with severe or critical disease were at risk for perinatal complications compared to those who were asymptomatic. Patients classified with mild or moderate disease were not shown to have an increased risk compared to asymptomatic positive patients.

  • Tool Helps Emergency Providers Better Stratify COVID-19 Patients

The tool is particularly effective at illuminating which patients are at both ends of the severity spectrum, which can be helpful to emergency clinicians as they make their disposition decisions. Still, it is up to clinicians to consider the information provided, and then use their clinical judgment.

  • Predicting the Progression of Chronic Aortic Regurgitation

A large database observational study of patients with chronic aortic mild or moderate regurgitation (AR) largely due to bicuspid aortic valve or aortic root dilatation showed that it was largely an indolent disease, with only 20% progressing to moderately severe AR in five years.

  • ENA Acquires ESI Triage, Plans Enhancements

Nurses use the Emergency Severity Index triage system to assess for patient acuity as well as the expected level of care that a patient will require upon presentation to the ED.
