A New Treatment for Refractory Hyperlipidemia
In patients with familial hypercholesterolemia who are not at target LDL cholesterol levels on maximum-tolerated doses of statins and PCSK9 inhibitors, evinacumab, which inhibits angiopoietin-like 3, reduces LDL by more than 50% at the highest doses with few side effects requiring drug discontinuation vs. placebo.

Clinical vs. Genetic Risk for Coronary Disease
A study of the utility of a polygenetic score for coronary artery disease risk was compared to the pooled cohort equation (PCE) for determining which primary prevention patients would benefit from statin use. Only at the top 5% risk stratum did the genetic score exceed an odds ratio for coronary disease of 2. Using these data would increase statin recommendations by 4% vs. the PCE.

Statin Use Moderately Reduces Dementia Risk After Concussions in Older Individuals
In a large population study, concussion in older adults resulted in significantly higher risk for dementia that was modestly reduced among those taking a statin.

Statin Use Is Associated With a Lower Risk of Community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia
A population-based case-control study from Denmark found the use of statins was associated with a decreased risk for community-associated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, with the greatest benefit from higher doses.

Statins Associated with Lower Parkinson’s Risk in Diabetics
In approximately 50,000 individuals with Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, identified from a National Health Insurance database in Taiwan, statin use was dose-dependently associated with lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. This strengthens the argument for a possible protective role of statins.

Statin Use and Cognitive Effects: Not a Brain Drain
Despite earlier concerns by the FDA about adverse effects of statins on cognitive functioning, a meta-analysis of data from more than 28,000 patients enrolled in 18 randomized, placebo-controlled trials of statin therapy failed to show a causal relationship between treatment and adverse neurocognitive effects for patients with and without cognitive impairment.
