Web site launches weather/health warnings
The new web site MediClim.com gives warnings via custom e-mail alerts when chronic health problems are likely to be aggravated by local weather conditions. The service targets people who suffer from problems such as migraines, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, and heart conditions.
MediClim.com tracks weather patterns, identifies when conditions are more likely to affect health, and alerts subscribers with an email the day before potential weather health risks. It says it is the only health-weather forecast in North America. The service is free. Users sign-up with an email and zip code (to localize weather warnings).
Founded by physician John Bart, MBBS, and senior career meteorologist Denis Bourque, MSc.
Bart said, "Our goal is to improve the lives of people with chronic or re-occuring illnesses by warning them when weather may compound their pain. It is our hope that armed with this knowledge, people may heed their doctor's advice more carefully during a weather alert to minimize any impact. For example migraine sufferers could plan a shorter work day when a MediClim e-mail warns that tomorrow's weather may worsen their condition."
Bart and Bourque have identified 14 distinct categories of weather known to affect health. Bourque said, "We're at the tip of the iceberg in terms of the weather/health relationship."
There are plans under way to expand the range of health matters MediClim will warn against. "We believe this Medical Climate index could be as important as the U.V. index, smog advisories and other mainstream weather forecasting tools," Bourque said.
