Save $25,000 by putting PPE in vending machines
Safety leader: 'It really adds up'
In addition to getting a sandwich or drink from a vending machine, employees of Roswell, GA-based Kimberly-Clark Professional now get their personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety eyewear, hearing protection, and respirators from one, too. The goal is to control waste.
"This removes a person from a storeroom, where equipment can sometimes walk away," says Scott Gaddis, the company's global safety capability leader. This simple change has resulted in a 60-75% cost savings, with an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 saved annually at each manufacturing facility.
The same badge that gives an employee access to the facility is swiped into the dispensing machine, which logs items are taken so that usage reports can be run.
"In the past we just didn't monitor high- volume, low-cost bin fill items like PPE," says Gaddis. "But over a period of weeks or months, it really adds up." Gaddis says that the cost of the machines, which are stocked by the company, ranged from $10,000 to $15,000.
