• MarkCare Medical Systems (Bloomfield, NJ), a subsidiary of Mark Solutions, and Data General (Westboro, MA), have developed a new picture archiving communications system (PACs) called IntraScan II WB that links hospitals and medical professionals to a wider variety of patient information via the Internet. The system allows historical patient studies to be accessed from any web browser, including Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, for use in comparisons and assistance in diagnosing current patients. It also allows original data to be available in the event a clinician wants to check a patient’s record anytime, from anywhere. MarkCare manufactures and distributes medical imaging systems, including multi-modality workstations, filmless and semi-filmless PACS, and electronic data links for a wide range of applications.
• The Texas Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Detection System (MFADS; Plano, Texas) is performing well above expectations, according to a report recently released from the state’s Office of Investigations and Enforcement, part of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. In its first year of operation, MFADS achieved 138% in performance improvement above projections, representing more than $2.2 million dollars targeted for recovery and nearly 1400 suspects identified for further investigation, according to the report. EDS (Dallas) heads a team of three companies, including HNC Insurance Solutions and Intelligent Technologies Corp., responsible for the Texas MFADS. The system employs neural network or learning technology to analyze substantial amounts of claims data to identify healthcare providers suspected of Medicaid fraud, abuse or wastefulness.
