• Axolotl (Mountain View, CA) and Catholic Healthcare West (CHW; San Francisco) have entered into an agreement to make Axolotl’s Elysium suite of clinical messaging products available to all of CHW’s 48 hospitals and 11,000 physicians. The products include the Elysium Access, a browser-based clinical information system, and the Workstation, an upgrade to Access, which provides a set of workflow and automation capabilities for the ambulatory care setting.
• Eclipsys (Delray Beach, FL), a developer of outcomes-focused healthcare IT solutions, said it has completed its acquisition of Intelus and Med Data Systems for $25 million in cash. Both wholly owned subsidiaries of SunGard Data Systems, Intelus (Rockville, MD) and Med Data (Vista, CA) offer a range of document imaging, document workflow and health information management solutions to the Eclipsys Sunrise suite of products. The transaction was completed March 31. Eclipsys Chairman and CEO Harvey J. Wilson said that the acquisitions offer""tremendous value relative to what these companies and their products add to our organization." Document management and workflow-automation products from Intelus and Med Data include ChartFlo 2000, an enterprise-wide information management system; CDM 20O0, a clinical data management solution; AccountFlo 2000, providing patient accounts imaging and workflow; Enterprise 2000, providing purchasing, accounts payable and human resources imaging; and Medrec II, a chart management product for the acute and ambulatory care marketplaces.
• The Enrisco Managed Care Technologies unit of IMS Health (London) has entered into an alliance with Microsoft (Redmond, WA) to deliver the Facets client/server solution on the Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system. Enrisco will develop a SQL Server 7.0 database alternative for managed care organizations seeking a complete Microsoft solution. The Facets and Microsoft solution will be developed on a server platform from Compaq (Houston). The new product is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year.
• Ericsson Communications (Montreal) and medEra Life Science (Toronto) have formed an alliance to develop an Internet-based health and healing information center and other e-medicine projects. The agreement could be worth up to $4 million during the first year, the companies said. Ericsson will provide the technical project design and management, overall site architecture, advertising and other elements. A prototype of the center is located at www.medbroadcast.com, and the site itself is expected to be operational by the second quarter 1999.
• Medirisk (Atlanta) has acquired certain assets of Healthcare Credentials Management Services (HCMS; Deerfield, IL), a subsidiary of MMI Companies. HCMS provides online verification and outsource credentialing services to over 300 hospitals and managed care clients. Medirisk purchased HCMS for $4 million in cash. In March, Medirisk acquired the Patient Care Analyst Internet data analysis tool. With the latest purchase, Medirisk takes over two Internet-based products, Healthcare Credentials Online and AppSTAT.
• The Miller Freeman Co., a subsidiary of United News & Media plc (London) has acquired CME (Irvine, CA), a provider of continuing medical education programs for psychiatrists and other physicians. CME founder and CEO John Schwartz, MD, will remain CEO of the company and operations of the company are expected to remain the same, the companies said in a release. CME will be integrated with Miller Freeman’s Healthcare Communications Group (San Francisco).
• NDC Health Information Services (Atlanta) has entered into an agreement with Arrow Pharmacy and Nutrition Centers (Farmington, CT) to provide pre- and post-editing services for Arrow’s prescription claims. The system will be installed in more than 30 drug stores in six states. It will be used for data management for pharmacy prescription claims to reduce errors, provide claims analysis and increase reimbursements.
• Pangea Systems (Oakland, CA) and Isadra (Palo Alto, CA) have formed an alliance to develop the infrastructure to create a life sciences Internet information hub for biopharmaceutical companies. Pangea will provide its bioinformatics knowledge and the company’s PULSE environment with its application programming interface to integrate and analyze biological information. Isadra will provide its Cooperative Commerce technology platform for e-commerce, which makes it possible to aggregate diverse and complex product information into a single site.
