• ALI Technologies (Richmond, British Columbia) said Columbia/HCA (Nashville) has purchased ALI’s UltraPACS image management networks for ultrasound, nuclear medicine and teleradiology applications for five hospitals in the Richmond, VA, area. The networks will be installed at Columbia/HCA’s Chippenham, Johnston-Willis, Henrico Doctors, John Randolph and Retreat hospitals, linking a total of 31 imaging devices, including 14 ultrasound, 12 nuclear medicine and five computed tomography systems. Local area networks at each site will be interconnected via Columbia Richmond’s wide area network so that images can be reviewed at any site at any time. A database will integrate patients records for all facilities. ALI said the sale is valued at more than C$1 million.
• Competitive Technologies (CTT; Fairfield, CT) said that its client, NTRU Cryptosystems (Providence, RI) has completed the development and testing of C and Java code implementations of its Tumbler advanced encryption technology and is ready for distribution to licensees, including Sony, an investor in NTRU. Competitive Technologies said that Tumbler "is able to achieve levels of speed and efficiency previously unthinkable in the public key encryption area," offering decrypting speeds up to 100 times faster than its nearest rival. The company said the Tumbler technology "also provides a possible solution to the paradox of public security versus personal privacy faced by individuals and businesses using the Internet and other digital networks." Completion and delivery of the Tumbler software code to Sony well ahead of schedule generates what was described as "a significant milestone payment" to CTT. Terms of that payment were not disclosed. CTT also will share in a portion of future revenues realized by NTRU from the sale and licensing of Tumbler to other companies.
• Passport Health Communications (Brentwood, TN) said it is launching its Passport OneSource product at sites in Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania. OneSource provides administrative healthcare data to hospitals and physicians via the Internet. The company said use of OneSource in Tennessee since the product was introduced to markets there in 1997 "has already saved healthcare providers nearly $840,000," a figure that is increasing by 25% a month. Jim lackey, president and CEO, said the company is "ready to move into new markets. Based on available data and market conditions, we are confident of our potential in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Florida." Using Passport OneSource, physician and hospital staff can input up to 50 patient names at a time on a secure Internet site and verify eligibility, benefits, claims, and formularies. Passport announced contracts with Healtheon/ Actamed, Envoy, and MedEAmerica, enabling OneSource clients to access data from six of the top 10 U.S. payers via the Internet. The Envoy contract allows Passport clients to access Cigna, Aetna, US Healthcare, Prudential, Oxford Health, QualMed and Medicaid in 27 states. The Healtheon/Actamed agreement gives access to United Healthcare nationwide, and MedEAmerica provides a variety of data, including eligibility and benefits from Medicaid and Medicare databases in a number of states.
