Find out if your physicians are happy
A new benchmarking program enables medical groups to gather data about the level of satisfaction among providers in their organization and compare the results by clinic, site, and specialty, as well as comparing themselves with other groups.
The program, developed by the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) in Alexan-dria, VA, is linked to the AMGA nationally recognized patient satisfaction benchmarking program, says Julie Sanderson-Austin, RN, vice president of quality management and research.
The AMGA developed an 80-question survey to measure provider satisfaction and conducted pilot studies with 15 medical groups. "We have found that it does measure all the dimensions of physicians’ work life we intended to measure," Sanderson says. However, she adds, there are not enough data from the pilot studies to draw conclusions.
The survey measures multiple dimensions, including the community, daily practice, managed care, amount of work performed, compensation, satisfaction about their education, and other areas.
"We thought we should start measuring what it is about the health system and about practicing that physicians are not satisfied with. That would give the health system the ability to see how changing certain attributes of the system could help physicians find joy in medicine again," she says.
