Inside the Data Mine: Showcasing UR/QA
The latest look inside the Data Mine of San Ramon, CA-based health care consulting firm GE Medical Systems Health Care Solutions (HCS — formerly MECON) shows that health care facilities spend an average of $29 per adjusted discharge for services rendered by their utilization review and quality assurance (UR/QA) departments. How do you compare?
HCS found that in one year’s time, the average UR/QA department tracks more than 12,300 cases. The majority of UR/QA departments maintains results in an electronic database and accesses a quality management information system. However, less than 10% obtain information on necessity and intensity of services directly from an electronic database. (See charts, p. 106.)
The data that appear in the HCS Data Mine have been extracted from the PEERnext database, which currently tracks more than 33,000 items of information in more than 280 departments.
