Program ideas to support single parents
Here are a few more suggestions for ways in which you can help single-parent employees deal with work and family issues:
· Sponsor employee support groups. Dialogue with other employees who have been, or who are in a similar position, can be extremely beneficial. If you don't have an in-house Employee Assistance Plan (EAP), you may wish to contact an outside psychologist or counselor to serve as facilitator.
· Provide sick child-care services. Many hospitals across the country have created "Sick Child-Care Centers" to help single parents when last-minute emergencies arise, and their regular caregivers are unable to provide services. Consider formalizing such an arrangement with your local hospital, for instances when children are too sick to go to school but well enough to be with another caregiver.
· Recognize your single parents. March 21 has been declared by Congress as the day to honor all single parents. However, only the state of Colorado has chosen to follow suit at this time. Since your organization may already recognize Boss's Day, or Secretary's Day, why not recognize single parents on Single Parents Day?
