System Year 2000 Task Force Roles
At Egleston Children's Health Care System in Decatur, GA, a year 2000 task force is playing a key role in preparing for Jan. 1, 2000. Egleston is Georgia's largest health care system dedicated exclusively to pediatrics. Administrators there have been preparing for the big day since the late 1980s.
The task force is made up of a diverse group representing every area of the health system. It is charged with a multitude of tasks including:
Mini-task forces.
Ensures smaller tasks are delegated and the main task force doesn't get bogged down in minutiae.
Presentation development.
Gathers and organizes information for presentation to top management.
Departmental education.
Presents information/updates to various hospital departments.
Definition of mission critical systems.
A triage system that is probably not feasible to ensure every single system and device are compliant, but key systems must be.
Contingency plans.
Egleston has manual systems ready to go should computer systems fail on Jan. 1, 2000. Staff must be trained to use these manual systems.
Systemwide recommendations.
Holiday period: Egleston will extend the New Year's Day holiday for three to five days in order to accommodate the date change.
Freeze on new systems installation.
Because the IS staff is stretched thin, no new system installations are planned for now.
