Exercises can bring your brain into balance
Most of us are either "right-brained" or "left-brained," which predisposes us to prefer (and be better at) different types of work-related tasks. Through specifically designed exercises, however, we can achieve better integration of the hemispheres in our brains, allowing us to perform more effectively. This, in turn, can boost self-esteem and morale on the job.
Engaging the whole brain
Natural Intelligence Systems Inc., in New York City, offers employees a number of exercises designed to achieve that integration.
A "crossover movement," a basic exercise, encourages employees to perform it at least once a day. This exercise can be done sitting or standing; simply touch one hand to the opposite knee. While it appears quite simple, this particular exercise stimulates both the right and left hemispheres of the brain to work together. It is designed to boost memory and concentration.
Another exercise is designed to help eye coordination. Why is this important? Many employees today do a lot of computer work, and eyestrain can be experienced not only as a headache or stiff neck, but as a lack of concentration. (For more on computers and eyestrain, see this month’s cover story.)
The "Lazy 8’s" exercise is designed to counteract such eyestrain. You draw circles around your eyes in the air with one hand at a time. Start with the thumb of one hand in front of your nose, and "draw" circles upward around the left eye, and then the right, all the time slowly following your thumb with your eyes.
Next, change to the other hand, to engage the opposite brain hemisphere. Finally, repeat using both hands simultaneously to engage the whole brain. This exercise should be repeated about five to 10 times, which will take a total of about one minute. In addition to reducing eyestrain, it can help improve reading speed and comprehension.
