Check your devices for compliance
Check your devices for compliance
Some instructions are easy to follow
Whatever instruments and devices are in your department, you should be checking them for year 2000 (Y2K) compliance.
Some older devices may have to be discarded and replaced, but for some, a relatively simple procedure will keep you up and running at the turn of the year. As an example, what follows is a set of instructions for a programmer for drug-delivery systems that you may work with. The device has a minor Y2K glitch that can be fixed within your department. Instructions for correcting Y2K errors in other devices will be different from these, but may not be too different. Check with their manufacturers.
If you have Medtronic’s Model 8820 SynchroMed, infusion therapy will not be affected by Y2K, but the laptop computer’s internal clock will cause "1980" to be displayed and printed out when the computer is used after December 31, 1999. A one-time keyboard date entry is needed to set the date to 2000, and then the clock runs normally. Medtronic’s Web site lists these date and time change instructions:
1. Press F4-OPTIONS to display the Options Menu. Press D to display the Reset Time/Date Screen. This screen appears with the cursor on Time.
2. Enter the correct time in the 24-hour clock format and press Enter. The message "Enter time 00:00-23:59" is displayed in the top center of the screen. If the time is already correct, press Enter to advance to the date. It is not necessary to enter the colon (:) when entering the time.
3. Enter the correct date. The message "Enter date MM/DD/YY" is displayed in the top center of the screen. If the date is already correct, press Enter and proceed to Step 4. For the first use after January 1, 2000, enter MM/DD/00. If the date is not correct, enter it according to the six-digit MM/DD/YY format, press Enter, and proceed to Step 4. It is not necessary to enter the slash (/) when entering the date. If an invalid date is entered, such as 02/31/94, the programmer beeps and the message "Invalid date" appears in the top right of the screen. You must enter a valid date in order to proceed.
4. Press F2 to return to the Options Screen. The programmer uses the time and date displayed on the Reset Time/Date Screen to update the system clock. "Date field incomplete" appears if new time or date was entered and no terminator was pressed. If this happens, press Enter before pressing F2.
5. Press F2 again to return to the original, previous screen.
