Hospitals in the South Atlantic region have lower mortality and higher occupancy rates than other regions, but those in New England have the lowest costs and the longest lengths of stay of hospitals in the country.
Employees at Mountain region hospitals are more productive than their peers elsewhere in the nation, and the hospitals where they work have the shortest lengths of stay. Facilities in the West Central region are more profitable than others.
Those statistics come from a study of top regional hospitals as chosen by HCIA-Sachs in Baltimore. Some 400 hospitals in the nine census regions are recognized for quality of care, efficiency of operations, and the sustainability of their overall performance.
"The 100 Top Hospitals regional winners are shining examples of hospitals that have built a culture around continuous performance improvement," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president of HCIA-Sachs. "These hospitals offer consumers throughout their regions superior quality of care, better access to that care, and overall performance that is consistent year after year."
