Access to clinical trials questioned
A North Carolina study contends that managed care patients are less likely to participate in clinical trials, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
A study conducted by the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control says that of 2,400 cancer patients studied in five Southeast states, managed care enrollees were only half as likely to enter a clinical trial as patients with indemnity insurance.
The group may push for legislation to require insurers to cover clinical trial participation. However, some MCOs contend that they cover member participation in clinical trials if the treatment in question has been proved medically effective.
