Infusion of morphine to take a hit?
A Phase I test analyzing the delivery of morphine by inhalation shows it is as effective as morphine delivered intravenously.
Aradigm Corp. of Hayward, CA, has reported that data from a two-center clinical trial of its AERx Pain Management System show the speed of onset and the reproducibility of morphine delivered by the inhalation system was comparable to morphine delivered intravenously.
The system is designed to provide patient- controlled pain relief in the home to people with AIDS, cancer, other chronic severe pain conditions, and acute pain following surgery.
The study involved 16 healthy volunteers at Harris Laboratories in Lincoln, NE, and 12 healthy volunteers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
