The American Lung Association
The American Lung Association (ALA) is a voluntary health organization that provides research funding to researchers working in various aspects of diseases infecting the lung, including cancer. Awards from the ALA include the Lung Health Research Dissertation Grants, Research Training Fellowships, Clinical Research Grants, and the Career Investigator Award. Other awards are the Alliance Awards, including the Dalsemer Research Grant, and the ALA/Loimphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) Foundation Research Grant.
Lung Health Research Dissertation Grant. This award provides fellowship support for doctoral research training for individuals conducting dissertation research on lung disease. Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral degree program; however, this particular program is not directed toward individuals conducting laboratory research that does not involve patients or patient data. Awards of $21,000 per year are made for a period of two years, and are subject to annual review. They may be used to cover stipends and research support. Up to $1,000 may be used for travel. Deadline for application for this grant is Oct. 1, with funding beginning in July 1 of the following calendar year.
Research Training Fellowship Award. This award is intended to support the training of scientific investigators involved in lung biology research. Applicants may be either MDs or PhDs and must not be beyond the third year of post-doctoral training at the time of application. Awards of $32,500 per year are made for a period of two years, and are subject to annual review. Applicants must designate a sponsor who is a recognized authority in his particular field of research. Awards are intended to support only salary and benefits. Applications are due Oct. 1, with funding beginning July 1 of the following year.
Clinical Research Grant. This ALA grant is intended to provide starter or seed money to investigators working in clinical areas relevant to lung disease. At the time of application, applicants must hold a doctoral degree, a faculty appointment, and have completed two years of post doctoral research training. Awards are made for up to two years at $25,000 per year, with no more than 25% of the requested budget used for salary. Applications are due on Nov. 1, with funding beginning on July 1 of the following calendar year.
Research Grant. This grant is intended to support research into the pathogenic mechanisms of lung disease. Applicants must hold a faculty position and a doctoral degree at the time of application. The terms of this award are very similar to the clinical research grant noted above, with $25,000 per year awarded for up to two years. Deadline for application is Nov. 1.
Career Investigator Award. This award is intended for researchers working in the field of lung disease who are making the transition from junior to mid-level faculty. Applicants must hold a faculty position at the level of assistant or associate professor and have a doctoral degree. Awards are made for terms of three years, and are subject to annual review. Awards are made in the amount of $35,000 per year, which may be used for salary or project support. Investigators are expected to devote at least 75% of their time to research. Deadline for this application is Oct. 1.
The Dalsemer Research Grant. This grant is intended to support research into interstitial lung disease. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree and a faculty appointment at an academic institution, as well as have completed two years of research training. Awards are made in the amount of $25,000 per year for up to two years. No more than 25% of the budget may be used for salary of the principal investigator. Deadline for application is Nov. 1, with funding beginning on July 1 of the following calendar year.
ALA/LAM Foundation Research Grant. The LAM Foundation supports research into clinical laboratory epidemiologic or other areas related to loimphangioleiomyomatosis. This award also is intended for researchers holding a doctoral degree, a faculty appointment at an academic institution, and who have completed two years of research training. Awards are made in the amount of $25,000 per year for up to two years, with no more than 20% available for salary support, other than the principal investigator. However, funds made be used to support salary of other personnel. Deadline for application is November 1.
