Managed care enrollment up
Enrollment in managed care plans grew dramatically from 1993 to 1995, fueled by increasing acceptance of managed care by small businesses and a growing movement towards managed care by self-insured companies, according to a survey of 2,037 employers by KPMG Peat Marwick and Wayne State University.
Seventy-three percent of Americans who receive health insurance from their employers were members of managed care plans in 1995, a 50% increase over 1993, according to the study. Fee-for-service health plans served only 27% of the employees of the firms surveyed, compared to 49% of workers in 1993. The causal factors attributed to that change include an increasing acceptance of managed care by small businesses. According to the survey, 69% of insured workers in firms employing fewer than 50 people are now in managed care plans, an increase from 22% in 1993. And by 1995, managed care plans covered 61% of employees in self-insured plans, compared to 33% in 1993.
