Home rehab staff must be flexible, experienced
Pioneer attitude can bring success
When Dana Trainor, CRRN, CCM, interviews staff for the new Bryn Mawr Rehab at Home program, she looks for "people who want to be pioneers in a new concept."
Trainor, program manager for the new physician-directed home rehab program, tells about her personal frustration with the current system of rehabilitation care and about hearing the problems patients and families encountered when they tried to use what they learned in the hospital at home.
"This is an opportunity for us to do it in a different way that will have more meaning for the patients," she says.
The Bryn Mawr Rehab at Home staff, all employees of Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation, must have at least three years of experience in rehab or home care and must be willing to travel between the home program and other venues within the rehab system as needed, Trainor says.
The flexible approach to staff utilization helps save money by ensuring that staff remain busy even when the census drops, says Helen Cioschi, MSN, CRNP, CRRN, administrative director of the ortho-medical section of Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation. The program also will use per diem therapists to allow staff days off and to help cover on weekends.
Trainor anticipates that the core staff may be assigned to work Saturdays and Sundays, because those are the days when patients’ entire families are present.
Bryn Mawr Rehab at home offers the staff a salary scale that is competitive with other home care agencies. Employees go through the same orientation as other Bryn Mawr employees, as well as a special program to teach them about the Rehab at Home concept and home care issues.
