HHS publicizes names of loan defaulters
The names of 1,402 health care providers who have been kicked out of the Medicare and Medicaid programs for defaulting on their student loans have been published on the Department of Health and Human Services' internet Web site, HHS secretary Donna Shalala has announced. The names also appeared in the Jan. 20 Federal Register.
The health care providers, who collectively owe more than $107 million on Health Education Assistance Loans (HEAL) are also being considered by the Department of Justice for possible further litigation, as well as enforced collection through wage garnishment, attachment of property and seizure of bank accounts. HHS contends that it and the original lenders have attempted to secure repayment for at least three years.
The names are posted at the following Web address: http://www.defaulteddocs.dhhs.gov.n
