DOJ goes after hospitals for 72-hour rule violations
In letters sent last month, the Department of Justice leveled accusations of overbilling Medicare against more than 40 Colorado hospitals.
According to the DOJ, the hospitals violated the "72-hour rule," which prevents acute care facilities from separately billing Medicare for some outpatient services provided within three days of a hospital admission. In its letters, the DOJ demands that the hospitals resolve any overpayments to avoid the possibility of stiff fines.
It's likely that all 4,700 hospitals under the Prospective Payment System will receive similar correspondence, experts say.
