First aid training will include AEDs
Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) will be included in first aid training for hundreds of thousands of people starting in 1999, according to an announcement from the American Heart Association and the National Safety Council.
The two groups are combining efforts to incorporate AEDs into their first aid training as part of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) component. The small portable defibrillators are designed to be extremely easy to use, and many of them are being placed in public places for emergency use. The training programs should be available to the public by February 1999 under the name Heartsaver FACTS, which stands for First aid, automatic external defibrillator, CPR Training System. The eight-hour program includes teacher and student instruction manuals, videotapes, and an instructor’s CD-ROM.
