6: Sir Alexander Fleming’s Birthday (1881-1955). Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist, discovered penicillin. He won the Nobel Prize in 1954.

The National Association of Health Unit Coordina tors, a professional association for unit secretaries, unit clerks, and other professionals, promotes health unit coordinating as a profession. 27-29: National Oral Health 2000 Consortium Meeting. The consortium, held in Washington, DC, brings together public and private groups dedicated to improving public oral health. The organizers’ goals are to increase awareness about the importance of oral health among targeted populations, improve access to care, develop a database of oral health programs, and increase involvement of the dental team in community-based oral health programs.

1-30: Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
Gynecologic cancers — cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulvar, and tubal cancers — strike more than 82,000 American women each year. The Gynecological Cancer Foundation and the Society for Gynecologic Oncologists hope to increase awareness of these diseases through support of research and information about the role of gynecologic oncologists.
Women concerned about their risk for reproductive cancers can access the foundation’s Women’s Cancer Network at www.wcn.org to receive a personalized assessment or call (800) 444-4441 for a referral to a gynecologic oncologist in their area and an informational brochure.
