ªArrange for a top manager to take the employee out to lunch.
ªHave the company president or CEO send a personal note of thanks.
ªGive a gift to the employee that relates to his or her hobby.
ªProvide the employee and his or her spouse/ significant other with tickets to a sporting or cultural event. If it’s too expensive, try asking a company to donate the tickets. "We live in a world of negotiation," says Jim Sterling, SPHR, president of Sterling Consulting Services in Westerville, OH, "so why not try?"
ªRecognize an employee’s outstanding contribution in a staff meeting or in a letter to upper management. (If you do the latter, be sure to send a copy to the employee.)
ªGive the gift of time. Recognize that your employee’s time is valuable and give him or her the afternoon off.
ªIf several employees are deserving of recognition, let them go out to lunch as a group. "It improves camaraderie and morale at the same time," Sterling notes.
ªTell the worker’s family how much the employee is valued with a letter or note.
